Wynonna Judd Lexington Concert reviews
Alison Great; Willie Disappointing
Alison Krauss, the opening act, was a great fit for the warm evening and the outdoor venue. Her set made the evening worthwhile as she played for more than an hour and did an encore set on top of it. The sound system was beautifully matched to her voice and her music.
Wynonna, on the other hand, was not as enjoyable. He rushed from song to song, seeming to have something more important that he wanted to do. My first thought was that he might have been under the weather and wanting to wrap up quickly. Typically, a sign I interpret as meaning he's not enjoying himself and wants to do just the minimum to fulfill his contract is when he played for just barely an hour and did no encores.
There was little engagement with the audience, other than the frequent opportunities for them to sing out the most well known lines of his more popular tunes when Wynonna would cup his hand to his ear. At no point did he introduce the members of his band, which I thought was very odd. I love Wynonna and his music, but for me, the most enjoyable part of his set was sister Bobbie's honky tonk piano riffs.
